FDA Warns That Mixing Caffeine and Alcohol May Be Dangerous

While the FDA has long regulated the amount of caffeine that some drinks may contain, it has not regulated the amount of caffeine that can be put into energy drinks. Alcoholic energy drinks mix high amounts of caffeine with malt liquor. This combination poses health risks to young adults. As more and more teens and young adults are being brought into emergency rooms as a result of mixing alcohol and high amounts of caffeine, the FDA has begun to issue warnings to companies who make these types of drinks.

One alcoholic energy drink in particular has been at the forefront of the controversy of whether drinks which mix alcohol and caffeine may be dangerous. Four Loko, made by Phusion Projects, LLC, was thrown into the spotlight when college students began showing up in emergency rooms after consuming Four Loko energy drinks at parties.
